Can AI replace trainers? A balanced view of AI in workplace training

Over the last few months, LinkedIn has become an interesting place for anyone working in learning and development.
Hardly a day goes by without another post confidently announcing that AI will never replace trainers, learning designers or teachers. Scroll a little further and you'll usually find someone explaining why everyone should stop using traditional authoring tools and build everything in Claude, ChatGPT or another AI platform instead.
The conversation seems to have become incredibly polarised. AI is either being presented as an existential threat or the answer to every problem. From our perspective, neither viewpoint is particularly helpful.
Like many learning providers, we're using AI every single day. It's become part of the way we work, helping us speed up development, challenge our own thinking, automate repetitive tasks and create richer learning experiences than were possible only a couple of years ago.
At the same time, we've become increasingly convinced that asking whether AI will replace trainers is missing the point entirely. The more interesting question is where AI genuinely improves learning, and where people continue to add something technology simply can't.
Good learning has never been about information
It's easy to forget that access to information has never been the biggest challenge in learning. Long before AI arrived, learners had books, manuals, Google, YouTube and countless other resources available to them. Organisations have spent years creating libraries of content, knowledge bases and documented procedures. None of those things replaced trainers because information alone has never been enough to develop competence.
Learning happens when people begin applying knowledge, asking questions, making mistakes and receiving meaningful feedback. It develops through discussion, reflection and practice, not simply by reading or watching something once. That's why the best trainers rarely spend all of their time presenting information. Instead, they focus on helping people make sense of it, connecting it to real situations and building the confidence needed to use it in practice.
This is something we think about constantly when designing learning. The objective has never been to help someone pass a quiz at the end of a course. It's to create learning that still influences the decisions they make months or even years later.
AI is changing the role of the trainer
There is no question that AI is changing education and workplace learning. Learners can now summarise theories, draft assignments, create lesson plans and find explanations for almost any topic within seconds. Those capabilities aren't going away, and pretending they don't exist doesn't help anyone. Instead, they encourage us to think differently about where trainers bring the greatest value.
Rather than spending time checking whether somebody can repeat information they've found online, trainers have a greater opportunity to explore whether learners genuinely understand it. Professional discussions, practical demonstrations, observations and realistic scenarios become increasingly valuable because they ask learners to explain their thinking, justify decisions and apply knowledge in context.
In many ways, this isn't a completely new direction. Good trainers have always looked beyond memorisation. AI simply makes those higher-level skills even more important.
Learning design is facing the same debate
Exactly the same conversation is happening within digital learning design. There are now countless posts suggesting that traditional authoring tools are finished, that SCORM is obsolete and that organisations should abandon existing approaches in favour of building everything directly through AI.
It's an interesting debate, but one that often overlooks why those tools became industry standards in the first place. Organisations still need learning that works across multiple learning management systems. They still need completion tracking, reliable reporting and accessibility that meets recognised standards such as WCAG. They still need content that works consistently for thousands of learners across different browsers, devices and assistive technologies.
Those requirements haven't disappeared because AI has become more capable. If anything, they're becoming more important as organisations place greater emphasis on inclusive learning and measurable outcomes.
Innovation doesn't always mean replacing what's already there. More often, it means understanding why something works, keeping the elements that continue to add value and enhancing the learner experience where new technology genuinely offers something better.
Finding the right balance
This is very much the approach we've chosen to take.
Rather than viewing AI as a replacement for existing learning design, we're using it to build on proven foundations. Traditional authoring tools continue to provide the accessibility, structure and compatibility that organisations rely on every day, while AI allows us to introduce new opportunities for learners to practise what they've learned.
One of the developments we're most excited about is integrating AI-powered practice activities into our courses. Instead of simply answering multiple-choice questions, learners can work through realistic workplace scenarios and receive personalised feedback based on the decisions they make. They can identify strengths, understand where improvements could be made and immediately apply that feedback before moving on.
It's still self-paced learning. It's still fully trackable through an LMS. But it creates something much closer to the experience of having a trainer available to coach someone through a situation, without losing the flexibility that organisations value from digital learning.
For us, that's a far more exciting use of AI than replacing an entire learning experience with automatically generated content.
Technology should support people, not replace them
One of the themes that runs through many of our blogs is the belief that organisations should own their own training. That philosophy hasn't changed because AI has entered the conversation.
Businesses still need subject matter experts. They still need confident trainers who understand their culture, their customers and the challenges their people face every day. They still need learning that reflects the reality of their own organisation rather than generic examples pulled from the internet.
AI can absolutely support those ambitions. It can make learning more engaging, provide opportunities for practice and reduce the time spent on repetitive development tasks. What it can't do is replace the experience, judgement and understanding that great trainers bring to every learning experience. Perhaps that's why we think the conversation needs to change.
Rather than asking whether AI will replace trainers, perhaps we should be asking how trainers, learning designers and technology can work together to create better learning than any one of them could achieve alone.
Because ultimately, that's the goal. Not more AI. Not less AI. Just better learning.
